CEREAL - CO2 Emission Reduction in road Lifecycles
A research project of the cross-border funded joint research programme “ENR2011 ENERGY – Sustainability and Energy Efficient Management of Roads”
We aim to make a CO2 footprint tool (software) to calculate the CO2 emissions of pavement constructions over its life cycle. In order to develop a tool that has the most added value and takes into account the knowledge and opinion of key-stakeholders, we would like to invite you to fill in a survey. Below you will find a profile of participants we are looking for and some background of the project.
Invitation for survey
Please leave us your contact details if:
you are working in the road sector (construction, maintenance, rehabilitation of roads),
you are working in Europe,
you are working for a national, regional or local road authority, contractor or consultancy in the road sector,
you have experience with use of CO2 calculations for road constructions or you are interested in calculating CO2 footprints of pavement constructions.
If you leave your contact details in this form, you will receive the survey (max 30 minutes) in January 2012.
In the development process there will be more opportunities to contribute to the tool, in the development and testing phase. In the survey you can indicate whether you want to be involved in this process and we will keep you informed.

Lloyd's Register and University of Antwerp's TRANSPORTNET join forces
From May 17 – 21, 2010 the University of Antwerp opens its doors for the first ‘Antwerp Rail School’ organised by its international network of leading University Groups, TRANSPORTNET, in close co-operation with Lloyd’s Register Rail, specialist provider of expert advice for rail rolling stock and infrastructure.
The theme will be ‘Railway to the future: business and academia join forces’.
The school will benefit both people working in rail operations and infrastructure businesses who want to improve their knowledge and learn new skills, and students at advanced Masters / PhD level who want to better understand the rail business and apply their learning in this challenging environment.
Antwerp Rail School 2010 will be held at the premises of the University of Antwerp.
This innovative approach has been pioneered by Lloyd’s Register working with TRANSPORTNET with the objective of bringing scientific knowledge and rail practice closer together. At the same time it will be an excellent opportunity to promote the rail world to students, acquainting them with a working environment which carries a long history and offers substantial growth possibilities.
Programme
The overall programme covers five days; participants can either join the entire week or opt for one or more days. Subjects will be Market Analysis (Monday), Technical and Safety Analysis (Tuesday) and Investment Analysis (Wednesday), Freight Niche Markets (Thursday) and Passenger Innovation and Policy (Friday). Speakers from the TRANSPORTNET universities will contribute conceptual, framework and process inputs, whilst well-known rail and rail supporting organisations will give practical, in-depth insight into their strategic decision-making. Welcome drinks on the first day as well as a leisure programme in Antwerp will be included.
Costs and practical issues
Lloyd’s Register and the University of Antwerp are pleased to welcome applications to join the School in w/c May 17 - the deadline for application has been set on Friday, April 23, 2010. Full programme details, speaker profiles, practical details as well as costs and discount possibilities can be found on the website; www.antwerprailschool2010.org, from where a registration form can be completed and downloaded.
Bundling strengths
“At Lloyd’s Register Rail, we are proud of our reputation of serving a wide range of clients and thus being able to bring several rail parties together. We are happy to share these benefits with the University of Antwerp’s TRANSPORTNET, enabling members of the rail community to broaden their scope and to share their experiences,” says Jack Doomernik, Domain Manager Infrastructure & Interfaces. Thierry Vanelslander of the Department of Transport and Regional Economics at the University of Antwerp adds: “Within our Department as well as our international network TRANSPORTNET, it is considered increasingly relevant to share our academic competences and network with business and industry. The rail industry has a solid reputation with innovative perspectives. We see great opportunities for students at advanced level who want to get the chance of making real-life applications and to get in touch with business.”

New version of industry leading swept-path software, AutoTURN, launched
Intertraffic Amsterdam 2010 - standnr. 01.121
Support for Specialized Transport Systems leads the List on New and Updated Features in AutoTURN 7.0
Rotterdam, Netherlands - Transoft Solutions, developers of the industry leading software for the engineering and architectural communities worldwide, announces he launch of AutoTURN 7.0. The newest version of Transoft Solutions’ CAD based swept-path software has added features and enhanced functionality that will be demonstrated at Transoft Solutions' stand 01-121 at Intertraffic exhibition, taking place 23-26 March in the Amsterdam RAI exhibition centre.
“We’re excited to be releasing this version of AutoTURN. This is a swept-path software that has traditionally had more transportation engineering know-how and research behind it than others within the industry and we’ve worked hard to put more into this version,” said Product Manager Mike Frost. “Designers will benefit from the product of that research in a more capable software that now includes support for specialty transport vehicles.”
Building on its legacy as the industry leading swept-path analysis software, AutoTURN 7.0 supports specialized transport systems in its SmartPath tools. This includes a library of specialized vehicles that includes: Wind Tower Trailer, Wind Blade Trailer, 19-axle Heavy Haul, Beam Transporter I, Beam Transporter II, and a Booster Trailer. These specialized vehicle configurations allow Independent Rear Steering (IRS).
Complementing the addition of the specialized transport systems support are three new functions. The Override Angle/Path Angle function allows designers to use a fixed or dynamic angle during forward simulations with IRS vehicles; to control rear bogie steering independently of the tractor to assess the potential drive path. Billy Chan, EIT, conducted extensive testing to ensure the accuracy of the movement characteristics algorithm. Three Part Reverse simulations for three part vehicles have been included in AutoTURN 7.0. Additionally, with the introduction of Telescoping Joint trailer support gives AutoTURN users the ability to design using logging trucks or create new types of vehicles with similar characteristics.
AutoTURN 7.0 allows designers to take their specialty transport system vehicles one step further to include cargo parameters. Cargo details, within the View/Edit Vehicle function, is a new ability to define the cargo size or set limiting factors to vehicles to operate within industry standards to prevent damage to the payload or surrounding infrastructure. Designers can also include cargo when working with specialized transport systems in the Simulations Properties. The Vehicle Cargo function draws the combined swept-path envelope of the vehicle body and the cargo to give designers a better visual representation of the clearance and tolerances.
“This version of AutoTURN is more robust than it has ever been,” said Frost. “Designers will get more productivity out of this software, than any that have come before it.”
Further information about AutoTURN 7.0, including a full list of new features and functions, a downloadable brochure, signup for an evaluation copy, product videos, and AutoTURN training solutions can be found at www.transoftsolutions.com/AutoTURN. Today the European Union produces a sixth of its electricity using renewable energy sources like wind, solar and hydro power. But that proportion will have to more than double over the coming decade if the EU is to keep its promise of tackling climate change by ensuring that 20 percent of our energy comes from renewable sources by 2020. This film, shot in Germany, Denmark and Spain looks at a number of projects supported by the EU's Intelligent Energy Europe Programme, which are designed to help the Union meet this ambitious target.
